Neurosurgery
Program Overview
Pediatric Neurosurgery is a 2-year comprehensive training program that allows fellows to gain knowledge, skills and attitude required to become an independent practitioner in Pediatric Neurosurgery. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn from highly qualified and experienced faculty dedicated in their practice to Pediatric Neurosurgery. The fellows will gain wide and varied clinical experience in neurosurgical management of pediatric patients ranging from premature babies, neonates, infants up to age of 18 years. Pediatric Neurosurgery division manages most of the pediatric population in the state of Qatar with neurosurgical problems.
Goals and Objectives
Wide range of opportunities are available to the fellows including:
- Multiple neurosurgery clinics per week with about 1000 patients per year.
- Perioperative preparation and planning for about 200 surgical cases per year.
- Management of inpatients with average of 400 admissions to pediatric neurosurgery ward.
- Weekly dedicated educational activities.
Clinical Training and Key Rotations
Fellows participate and contribute to the following:
MDT meetings:
Once weekly oncology multidisciplinary meeting: Part of this meeting discusses neuro-oncology cases (this meeting is attended by neurosurgeons, oncologist, radiologist, radiation therapist, pathologist, rehabilitation and palliative care).
Once weekly Pediatric Neurology education round including pediatric neuroradiology in which interesting cases of neurology and neurosurgery are discussed.
Once monthly specialized neuro-oncology: This meeting is more focused on neuro-oncology cases and includes neuro-oncologist, neuro pathologist, neuroradiologist and the neurosurgeons.
1-2/month epilepsy MDT meeting which includes epileptologist, pediatric neurologist, neuroradiologist, pathologist, nuclear medicine attendings, psychologist and a neurosurgeon.
MDT clinics:
Twice per month craniofacial multidisciplinary clinic in which we see craniofacial cases including craniosynostosis and syndromic cases that require multidisciplinary care by neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, ophthalmologist and other specialties.
Once weekly spina bifida clinic with our colleagues from nephrology, urology and rehabilitation.
Once monthly movement disorder clinic which deals mainly with patient with spasticity. This clinic includes colleagues from rehabilitation, orthopedic and neurology.
Entry Requirements
- Completion of an ACGME-I accredited or equivalent residency training program in Neurosurgery.
- Board certification in core specialty (Neurosurgery).
- Hold a valid Medical License or be eligible for licensure in Qatar (click here for more details).
