Program Overview

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship program is a 2-year ACGME-I accredited program offered by the Department of Psychiatry at Sidra Medicine, Doha, Qatar. The program faculty includes American and UK board certified psychiatrists. The setting offers a unique training opportunity given the multicultural nature of the patient population served by the hospital. The program focus is on providing excellent clinical care, including psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, to children and adolescents and their families. Fellows function as part of a multidisciplinary care team comprising of physicians, nurses, psychologists and social workers.

Goals and Objectives

The overall goal of the program is to train child and adolescent psychiatrists to provide excellent clinical care to children and adolescents and their families in hospitals and the community. The objectives of the program align with the 6 core competencies of ACGME-I and are as follows:

  • Fellows will develop skills in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients representing the full spectrum of psychiatric illness in children and adolescents.
  • Fellows will demonstrate knowledge in the full range of psychopathology in children and adolescents.
  • Fellows will demonstrate the ability to investigate and evaluate their care of patients, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence and continuously improve patient care based on constant self-evaluation and life-long learning.
  • Fellows will demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information and collaboration with patients, their families and health professionals.
  • Fellows will demonstrate professionalism and ethical behavior, including accountability to patients, families and health care professionals.
  • Fellows will demonstrate knowledge of the larger systems of care and effective use of resources to provide the best possible patient care.

Clinical Training and Key Rotations

The fellows rotate through inpatient psychiatry, acute care consultation-liaison, emergency department and outpatient services during the first year. During their second year, fellows continue their longitudinal outpatient clinic and have additional rotations in substance use and related disorders, schools and related medical sub-specialties. During these rotations, they are exposed to the general child and adolescent population, both psychiatrically well and unwell. Fellows receive direct and indirect supervision as well as many opportunities for mentorship. Fellows learn how to diagnose, assess, and treat children and teenagers by experienced clinical faculty as well. Fellows also learn skills in psychotherapy under supervision of psychologists. In addition, fellows have protected time for weekly didactics and participate in psychiatry grand rounds, journal clubs and case conferences. The program follows ACGME-I guidelines for duty hours.

Entry Requirements

  • Completion of an ACGME-I accredited or equivalent residency training program in General Psychiatry.
  • Board certification in core specialty (General Psychiatry).
  • Hold a valid Medical License or be eligible for licensure in Qatar (click here for more details).
