Endocrinology and Diabetes
Program Overview
This is a 3-year fellowship subspecialty training program designed to provide excellent course of clinical training and educational activities in the field of pediatric endocrinology. It is an advanced graduate medical education beyond the core pediatric training. Successful applicants for this program are select pediatric residency graduates, who show strong interest and passion to become pediatric endocrinologists.
To prepare our fellows, the program has a strong well-structured curriculum crafted specifically to incrementally advance medical knowledge, enrich clinical and teaching skills relevant to the field of pediatric endocrinology. Although research is not the primary focus of this program, exposure to basic clinical research, and opportunities for fellows to conduct small projects, is integrated within the curriculum
Adopted as standards for training and benchmarks for evaluation, this program follows the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) core competencies (Professionalism, Patient Care Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, and Systems-based Practice).
Goals and Objectives
It is the mission of the fellowship program to educate and train pediatricians to become clinically competent Pediatric Endocrinologists. We aim to ensure that fellows during their training are sufficiently exposed to the entire spectrum of common endocrine disorders, and demonstrate the following competencies:
- Elicit histories and performing general and focused physical examinations.
- Understand principles and attain interpretative skills of endocrine diagnostic tools and dynamic tests.
- Appropriately select evidence-based therapies and provide counseling to patients and their families with treatment plan, prognosis and outcomes of disease.
- Critically review scientific evidence and appropriate incorporate that to guide decisions in patient care and current clinical practice.
Clinical Training and Key Rotations
Inpatient clinical training
Inpatient training involves rotating duties where fellows are assigned to evaluate and follow patients under endocrinology inpatient service in addition to covering emergency department and inpatient consultations, which often come from neonatal intensive care unit, Pediatric intensive care unit, Hematology Oncology, Neurosurgery, and General Pediatrics. Working with inpatient teams and under supervision from faculty attendings, fellows are allowed to play the role of the first point of contact to endocrinology service, gathering clinical information from the consulting service, getting an appropriate history and physical examination, reviewing chart records, current and prior laboratory and diagnostic images, and formulating a plan of care. Fellows develop their teaching and supervising skills by working with junior trainees and medical students.
Outpatient training
In addition to attending outpatient rotations in endocrinology, diabetes and insulin pump clinics, fellows are allowed to have their own continuity clinic. We believe that having adequate exposure to outpatient diabetes and endocrinology clinic is needed to attain greatest breadth of experience.

Entry Requirements
- Completion of an ACGME-I accredited or equivalent residency training program in Pediatrics.
- Board certification in core specialty (Pediatrics).
- Hold a valid Medical License or be eligible for licensure in Qatar (click here for more details).
