Program Overview

The overall goal of the program is the consummate preparation of physicians as allergy and immunology specialists. The fellowship training program meets this goal by building on the established tradition of excellence while developing new ideas in the following areas: mentorship/professional development, fellowship balance, education, patient care, and research.

The pediatric allergy and immunology fellowship training program was established at Sidra Medicine as part of a combined Adult and Pediatrics Allergy and Immunology Fellowship program in Hamad Medical Corporation in 2017.

Goals and Objectives

  • The overall goal of the Allergy and Immunology Fellowship program is to train internal medicine, and pediatric graduated residents to ensure the development of the knowledge and skills necessary to allow them to independently provide the best care for patients with all allergic and immunologic disorders.
  • The program is structured to allow the fellows to spend around 25 months of clinical activity and 7 months of research experience in Allergy and Immunology to achieve the program goal.
  • During the clinical activities, the fellow is actively involved in the management of various allergic and immunologic problems while developing progressive levels of responsibility during the weekly outpatient clinic visits and inpatient consultations. These clinical activities allow the Allergy and Immunology fellow to increase their patient care skills, as well as provide an opportunity for practice-based learning and improvement, enhance their interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and develop a systems-based practice.
  • While the supervision is mandated during all steps of training in our program, the fellows are growing increasing independence, by the consultant faculty and in the same time participating in assisting other rotating fellows and residents in patient care, fostering teaching skills.
  • The graduate of this program is expected to be able to practice competently and independently as a physician and leader specialized in the field of allergy and immunology and empowered to deal appropriately and professionally with a different range of allergy and immunology conditions.

Clinical Training and Key Rotations

First Year

During the first year of training, the fellow will have broad exposure to various types of problems in which the immune response is altered (either by deficiencies of various host-defense mechanisms or by the development of hypersensitivity states). This exposure will come through participation in allergy and immunology faculty and fellow continuity outpatient clinics, and management of inpatients with allergic and immunologic disorders. Fellows are directly supervised by faculty members in all clinical rotations.

The trainee will learn the various techniques necessary for patient evaluation, including skin testing, clinical immunology laboratory tests for evaluating immunologic competence, and pulmonary function testing. In-depth training in clinical and laboratory immunology is provided. The trainee will be expected to attend weekly divisional conferences in combination with Adult Allergy and Immunology program in Hamad General Hospital including:

  • Thursday morning immunology rounds reviewing current patients and a journal club focused in reviews of recent topics in scientific literature
  • This is followed with allergy and immunology seminar in which sessions by outside speakers and senior staff members are alternated with seminars given by the fellows on a wide range of basic and clinical topics and a monthly journal club during the first year. The fellows also have the opportunity to attend Pediatric House Staff Grand Rounds every Tuesday 11 AM. First year fellows also have a one-month laboratory rotation to learn basic allergy and immunology clinical tests and begin planning their second-year research project.
  • Thursday afternoon systemic board review

Second Year:

The second year is designed to allow trainees the maximum opportunity to participate in a research project of their choosing. Fellows may also enroll in graduate courses or degree programs directly related to their research projects if approved by the chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology. Program offerings include the Research Fellowship Training Program of the Sidra Medicine. Fellows spend 75 % of their effort in patient care during the second year that consists of a one half day fellow continuity clinic each week, four months clinic coverage and 26 weekends of at home inpatient call. Second year fellows will continue to participate in the same teaching conferences attended by first year. Second year fellows are also responsible for organizing monthly division journal clubs and seminars.

Third Year

Will be similar to 2nd year with more focus to obtain further basic training, research, clinical and teaching experience.

Entry Requirements

  • Completion of an ACGME-I accredited or equivalent residency training program in Pediatrics or Internal Medicine.
  • Board certification in core specialty (Pediatrics/Internal Medicine).
  • Hold a valid Medical License or be eligible for licensure in Qatar (click here for more details).
