This leaflet will provide you information about silicone Gel and what to look for when applying silicone gel.
Why should I use silicone gel for my child?
Silicone gel is used to improve the appearance of scars by softening it and reducing redness. It should be placed over the scar to create a thin film.
How can I apply the silicone gel?
Follow the steps below when applying silicone gel:
- Clean and dry the skin
- Apply any moisturizing cream or sunblock and wait for it to be absorbed into the skin
- Take a small amount of gel onto your finger tip
- Gently apply over the full scar area – DO NOT RUB
- Allow it to dry before placing clothing or any other items over it A tube of silicone gel should last for up to 6 weeks
What are the safety precautions I need to take?
- Monitor the condition of your child’s skin.
- Stop using the gel if any of the below happens:
- Itch/rash
- Swelling
- Peeling
- Maceration (white, moist, prune-like as if in the water for a long time)
- Do not use the silicone over open wounds
