Professor Dame Kay Davies Honoured for her contribution to science and medicine at the Functional Genomics Symposium 2018
Doha, Qatar, 10 December 2018: Sidra Medicine hosted its first Women in Science Workshop on the second day of its Functional Genomics Symposium 2018.
The Women in Science workshop featured an array of scientists including Professor Dame Kay Davies, the Professor of Genetics from Oxford University, UK; Dr. Elizabeth Ross, Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience from Weill Cornell Medicine, New York; Dr. Elizabeth Phimister, Deputy Editor of The New England Journal of Medicine, USA; Professor Mariam Al Ali Al Maadeed, Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies, Qatar University; and Dr. Souhaila Al Khodor, Research Investigator from Sidra Medicine.
The panelists highlighted their main motivation for joining the science and research fields; the challenges they had to overcome and what it took for them to be successful in their careers.
The conference scientific committee also awarded Professor Dame Kay Davies, as the inaugural Sidra Medicine Plenary Lecturer and for her contribution to science, medicine and training of future scientists.
Workshop organizer and moderator, Dr. Bernice Lo who is a Research Investigator at Sidra Medicine said, “We are incredibly honoured to have amongst us a spectrum of distinguished, accomplished and inspiring female scientists and researchers. Our main aim for the Women in Science workshop was to empower and encourage young women, especially in Qatar, pursuing careers in science. Awarding Prof. Davies was especially momentous as her contribution to science and genetics will have a key impact on future generations of young scientists.”
Moderator, Ms. Kholoud Al Shafai said, “As a young researcher at Sidra Medicine, I was very excited to hear from our female trail-blazers. The workshop clearly showcased that despite the challenges and obstacles we face as women in science, success is absolutely possible. I was particularly interested in Prof. Mariam Al Maadeed’s insights, as a Qatari woman leading the way in the field of science. I enjoyed moderating such an inspiring session and the audience interaction was terrific.”
