Dr. Muhammad Ather joined Sidra Medicine from Aneurin Bevin University Health Board (ABUHB), United Kingdom. Dr. Ather obtained his MBBS from Rawalpindi Medical College in 1995 and trained & worked in medicine and allied specialties in Pakistan and UK before joining the highly reputable Mid Glamorgan & Powys Psychiatric Training Scheme in 2003. He completed his Core General Psychiatry training in 2006 and postgraduate diploma in psychiatry (DPM) from Cardiff University, UK in 2007. Dr Ather was awarded MRCPsych in 2008 and CCT in child and adolescent psychiatry in 2013.
Dr. Ather has over 20 years of clinical experience. For last 14 years he has been working in psychiatry in UK and for more than 12 years in child and adolescent psychiatry. Before joining Sidra Dr. Ather served as a Consultant Psychiatrist in ABUHB, he was lead psychiatrist for Caerphilly County and Health Board (HB) Lead for child and adolescent substance misuse service. He also served as HB lead for psychopharmacological treatments for neuro-developmental disorders. Dr. Ather was member of Complex Needs (CN) and Integrated Service for Children with Additional Needs (ISCAN) panels of Caerphilly County, Wales, UK.
Dr. Ather is highly experienced in assessing and managing common, rare and complex psychiatric and behavioral disorders of the child and adolescent population. He has worked inpatients, outpatients and at day hospitals. He is particularly interested in the psychopharmacological management of neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, ASD, Tourette’s), mood disorders, early intervention for psychosis and eating disorders.
Dr. Ather was named clinical supervisor, mentor and HB lead for teaching and training of medical students and child psychiatry trainees. He has been teaching child psychiatry for more than 10 years. He is an examiner for Cardiff Medical School and has regularly organized training for MRCPsych candidates. He has organized and delivered training to school teachers, children social workers, police and other allied health professionals on child mental health.
Dr. Ather has completed a number of audits and have published two articles while three of his studies are ongoing. Dr. Ather has assisted National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH) in recruiting subjects for their currently ongoing study and rated DAWBA (Development and Wellbeing Assessment Scale), for the “Prevalence of Reactive Attachment Disorder”study. Dr. Ather also administered DAWBA and other assessment tools to participants of ADHD - Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) Study. At present, Dr. Ather is collaborating on two research projects in Pakistan.
Dr. Ather is an international speaker and has delivered talks on ADHD, Autism, First episode psychosis, Eating disorders etc. Dr Ather believes in teamwork, evidence based treatments and patient focused care.
