Sidra Medicine appoints Dr. Paul Lanier Ogburn Jr. as Clinical Chief, Obstetrics and Gynecology

Renowned expert in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Paul Lanier Ogburn, has joined Sidra Medicine as its inaugural Clinical Chief, Obstetrics and Gynecology. This is a vital appointment for the groundbreaking hospital, research and education institution in Doha, Qatar which will specialize in the care of women and children. Dr. Ogburn will also take up the position of Chair of Obstetrics at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q), Sidra Medicine’s partner for medical education and research.

Commenting on this latest appointment to Sidra Medicine’s rapidly expanding senior team, Chief Medical Officer Edward S. In addition to leading the clinical and educational aspects of Sidra Medicine’s obstetrics and gynecology division, Dr. Ogburn will collaborate with Sidra Medicine’s Chief Research Officer, Francesco M. Marincola, MD, FACS, to deliver research programs. In collaboration with Qatar’s Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and WCMC-Q, research at Sidra Medicine will focus on medical conditions, epidemiology and issues that primarily afflict the women and children of the Arab world, including diabetes, cancer and fetal-maternal health. As the first specialist research facility focusing on women’s and children’s health in the region, Sidra Medicine will develop clinical, translational and basic research programs to advance obstetrics and feto-maternal medicine and child health care.

Dr. Ogburn joins Sidra Medicine from the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine in New York, U.S. where he held the positions of Professor and Director, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Director, Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship. Prior to joining Stony Brook University School of Medicine in 2001, he was Head of Obstetrics at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota and a Professor at the Mayo Medical School. He has also held positions at Brown University, the Women and Infants’ Hospital of Rhode Island, the University of Minnesota and the University of North Carolina.

After studying medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Ogburn completed a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the same institution. His research interests include diabetes and pregnancy, preeclampsia, preterm labor and cord blood stem cell research among others. His research has resulted in the publication of over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles.
