Silicone Gel Sheeting
This leaflet will provide you information about Silicone Gel sheeting, how to apply it and the precautions you should consider.
Why should I use silicone gel sheet?
Silicone gel sheeting is used to improve the appearance of scars by softening, flattening and reducing redness.
How can I apply the Silicone Gel Sheet?
- Peel backing off
- Apply sticky side to the scar
- When taken off place back onto backing sheet or plastic container/bag
- Continue to wear the silicone until it begins to lose its stickiness and goes cloudy (at about 4-6 weeks depending on wearing time)
What are the safety precautions I need to take?
- Monitor the condition of your/ your child’s skin.
- STOP using if any of the below happens:
- Itch/rash
- Swelling
- Peeling
- Maceration (white, moist, prune-like as if in the water for a long time)
- Do not use the silicone over open wounds
- Ensure skin is clean, dry and moisturizing cream is completely absorbed before putting the silicone on
What are the care instructions I should consider?
- Wash the silicone gel with mild soap and clean water as needed
- Let it dry naturally or pat it dry with a low lint towel (such as linen tea towel). Avoid using paper products like kitchen paper and tissues as fibers can stick to the silicone
- Wash the silicone more regularly in hot weather and following physical activity
- Store in plastic container or bag
