Artificial Intelligence
and Medicine
Bringing Digital Breakthroughs to the Bedside
Overview of the Conference
Artificial Intelligence and Medicine – Bringing Digital Breakthroughs to the Bedside will be a milestone capacity-building activity for clinicians and researchers across Qatar. It will gather all those whose work intersects healthcare and AI to share their knowledge, experience, and challenges. This truly collaborative event, chaired by Dr. Mitchell Stotland, Sidra Medicine, co-chaired by Dr. Erchin Serpedin, Texas A&M – Qatar, and Dr. Faleh Marino, Qatar University, will feature in-person keynote addresses by leading authorities from around the world in addition to cutting-edge research presentations from investigators at Sidra Medicine, Texas A&M-Qatar, Qatar University, Hamad Medical Corporation, Hamad bin Khalifa University, Qatar Computing Research Institute, Weill Cornell Medical College-Qatar, and Aspetar.
The symposium will inform clinicians of the basic language and capabilities of modern machine learning techniques while sensitizing the computer engineering community to the broad scope of practical needs faced by healthcare providers that may be addressed by the digital breakthroughs of tomorrow.
Target Audience
- Physicians
- Nurses
- Medical Students
- Allied Healthcare Workers

- Lay public
Conference Objectives
By the end of the sessions, learners will be able to:
- Describe the basic architecture of a neural network
- Discuss the basic functions of a machine learning model (prediction, classification, identify clustering or trends, etc.)
- Identify the type (and format) of health data that lends itself best to machine learning models
- Describe at least three ethical issues related to the use of artificial intelligence in medicine (e.g., informed consent to use data, algorithmic fairness and bias, data privacy, corporate ownership of data, safety and transparency, loss of jobs, loss of human touch or empathy in medicine, etc.)
- Describe the use of artificial intelligence in computer-assisted surgical systems (including computer vision)
- Discuss the benefits and challenges of using artificial intelligence to manage data across large health systems (e.g., within UK National Health System Trusts)
- Describe some of the new developments in health-related artificial intelligence in the form of wearable devices
- Discuss the use of machine learning models to generate image facsimiles that facilitate the measurement of facial deformity
- Discuss the use of personalized drug response prediction for lung cancer patients
