Health Literacy Conference:

Patient safety through the eyes of health literacy

The Health and Wellness Education department at Sidra Medicine is hosting its fourth Health Literacy Conference from 18 to 19 October 2024.

Themed as "Patient Safety through the eyes of health literacy”, this year’s conference, in recognition of October’s International Health Literacy month, will focus on the critical role of health literacy in ensuring patient safety among healthcare professionals, policymakers, educators, and patients themselves.

Health literacy is crucial for maintaining patient safety in healthcare settings as individuals with higher levels of health literacy are better equipped to comprehend medical information, navigate healthcare settings, and adhere to treatment plans effectively. Conversely, limited health literacy often leads to misunderstandings, errors in medication intake, missed appointments, and overall poorer health outcomes.

By fostering a culture of comprehensive health literacy, healthcare professionals can empower patients to make informed decisions about their health, thereby reducing medical errors and promoting safer healthcare practices.
