Orthotics and Prosthetics

The Department provides services to hospital inpatients as well as outpatients. Orthotists regularly attend Orthopedic, Physical Rehabilitation Medicine and Plastics and Craniofacial clinics and are also available to attend other outpatient clinics on request.

The Orthotic Department works with children and young people, their families, other therapy services and referring medical officers to establish, restore and maintain optimum function and independence. The needs of each child will be assessed and the most appropriate orthotic management will be provided.

How the Orthotics/Prosthetics Process Works

Following a referral from a Sidra Medicine doctor the orthotist/prosthetist will meet with you and your child either in the unit (inpatients) or in an outpatient clinic (outpatients) to assess and prescribe an orthotic or prosthetic device as required. The next step is to take measurements of the patient so that a customized device can be made for them. Measurements may be taken using either a fiberglass cast or sophisticated 3D scanning technology. The measurements are then sent to a manufacturer to make a customized product just for you.

Our orthotics and prosthetics team provides:

  • Prescription, design, fitting, and monitoring orthoses and prostheses
  • Education and training in functional use and care of the orthoses and prostheses

When the orthosis or prosthesis is ready, you will be called back for another appointment. The orthotist or prosthetist will fit the device and make sure fits properly and supports function.
